Bali gets roughly 6 million foreign arrivals a year. Most of them cluster in the same four square kilometers. That means the difference between a mediocre trip and a great one isn’t the island. It’s the routing.
This 7-day plan is built around one principle: spend your mornings at the places everyone photographs, and your afternoons at the places nobody bothers to reach. You’ll hit the iconic spots once, then get out.
The Route That Solves Bali’s Biggest Problem
Bali’s traffic is not a joke. A 30-kilometer drive can take two hours between 4pm and 7pm. Most itineraries ignore this and pack three distant stops into one day. You’ll spend the trip in a car.
This route clusters destinations geographically. You move once every two days. That’s it.
| Day | Base | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ubud | Arrive, settle | Campuhan Ridge Walk | Ubud Palace, local warung |
| 2 | Ubud | Pura Tirta Empul (7:30am) | Sidemen Valley loop | Back to Ubud |
| 3 | Sidemen | Tegallalang rice terraces (6:45am) | Drive to Sidemen, village walk | Sunset at your guesthouse |
| 4 | Amed | Leave Sidemen 7am | Snorkeling at Jemeluk Bay | Sunset at Lipah Beach |
| 5 | Nusa Penida | Fast boat from Padangbai | Kelingking Beach | Stay near Crystal Bay |
| 6 | Uluwatu | Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong | Boat back, drive to Uluwatu | Uluwatu Temple kecak at 6pm |
| 7 | Uluwatu | Suluban Beach | Bingin Beach, slow lunch | Depart or extend |
You’ll notice Canggu and Seminyak are absent. That’s deliberate. More on that below.
Ubud Without the Selfie Crowds

Ubud is overrun, but only in a narrow band. The Monkey Forest, the central market, and the main street are a theme park by 10am. Walk 15 minutes in any direction and it’s a different town.
Start the Campuhan Ridge Walk at 6:30am. It’s a 2-kilometer paved path along a ridge. Free. You’ll share it with joggers and a few locals, not tour buses. By 9am it’s hot and crowded.
Pura Tirta Empul opens at 7am. The purification pools are the main event. Rent a sarong at the entrance for 15,000 IDR. Go straight to the pools before the tour groups arrive at 9am. The water is cold. That’s the point.
Skip the Bali Swing. It’s 500,000 IDR for a 30-second photo. The same jungle view is free from the Tegallalang terraces if you walk 10 minutes past the entrance. The terraces themselves are worth seeing once. Go at 6:45am. Pay the 25,000 IDR donation. Walk downhill, not uphill. The lower terraces are emptier.
For food, avoid the restaurants with English-only menus and TripAdvisor stickers. Go to Warung Biah Biah on Jalan Goutama. Nasi campur costs 35,000 IDR. It’s packed with locals at lunch. That’s the signal.
Why Sidemen Beats Ubud for a Night or Two
Sidemen is what Ubud was 20 years ago. Rice terraces, cloud-covered peaks, no traffic lights. It’s 90 minutes east of Ubud. Most tourists never go. That’s the whole argument.
Stay at a guesthouse with a valley view. Samanvaya has rooms from 900,000 IDR a night. Nirarta Center is cheaper, around 400,000 IDR. Both face Mount Agung.
Spend an afternoon walking the village paths. There’s no entrance fee, no ticket booth. Just concrete paths through rice fields. A local guide costs 150,000 IDR for two hours. You don’t need one, but the context helps. Farmers here still harvest by hand.
The failure mode in Sidemen is expecting nightlife. There is none. If you need bars and music, stay in Ubud. Sidemen is for slowing down. Two nights is the sweet spot. One night feels rushed. Three gets boring unless you’re writing a book.
The Amed Question: Worth the Drive?

Yes. Amed is a stretch of fishing villages on the northeast coast. Black sand, calm water, and snorkeling right off the beach. It’s the anti-Canggu.
Jemeluk Bay has coral 30 meters from shore. Rent a mask and fins for 50,000 IDR. You’ll see reef fish, maybe a turtle. No boat needed. This is the best value snorkeling in Bali.
The drive from Sidemen to Amed takes 2 hours. It’s winding. If you get carsick, take the coastal route through Candidasa instead. It’s longer but gentler.
Stay at Blue Moon Villas (from 700,000 IDR) or Life in Amed (from 450,000 IDR). Both are quiet. Eat at Warung Enak for fresh grilled fish. A whole snapper costs around 80,000 IDR.
One warning: Amed’s beach is not white sand. If you want the classic Bali beach photo, you’ll get that at Uluwatu. Amed is for swimming and snorkeling, not lounging.
Nusa Penida: One Day Is Enough
Nusa Penida is stunning. It’s also a logistical trap. The island’s roads are bad. The famous spots — Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong — are spread out and packed by 10am.
Here’s the fix: take the first fast boat from Padangbai at 7am. Book a driver for the day. A private car costs 600,000-700,000 IDR. Shared tours are cheaper but you’ll wait for stragglers at every stop.
Go to Kelingking first. The viewpoint is a 10-minute walk from the parking area. The hike down to the beach is steep and takes 45 minutes each way. Skip it unless you’re fit. The view from the top is the photo everyone wants anyway.
Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong are 30 minutes away. Angel’s Billabong is a natural infinity pool. Do not swim there. Waves have swept people off the rocks. This is not a joke. The signs are there for a reason.
Stay near Crystal Bay if you want a sunset swim. Penida Bambu Green has bungalows from 500,000 IDR. The next morning, take the 9am boat back. One day on Penida is enough. Two days is for divers.
Uluwatu: The Right Way to End

Uluwatu is cliffs, surf, and the best sunsets in Bali. It’s also the most expensive area on this route. Budget 1,500,000 IDR a night for a decent room with a view.
Skip the Uluwatu Temple kecak dance if you hate crowds. It’s 150,000 IDR and 500 people per show. Instead, watch the sunset from Suluban Beach. Walk down the stairs to the cave. Sit on the sand. Same sun, no ticket.
Bingin Beach is the hidden gem here. It’s a 10-minute walk down a cliff path. The beach has a few warungs serving cold Bintang and grilled corn. Spend the afternoon. Don’t rush.
For coffee, go to Suka Espresso in Uluwatu village. Flat white costs 40,000 IDR. Good beans. No influencer crowd.
The Traps to Avoid in 2026
Bali’s tourist economy is built on extracting money from tired, confused visitors. Here are the specific traps to dodge.
- Canggu and Seminyak: Traffic, overpriced cafes, and the same experience you can get in any beach town. Skip both entirely unless you’re a surfer who needs those specific breaks.
- The Bali Swing: 500,000 IDR for a photo. The jungle is free.
- Airport taxis: The official counter charges 350,000 IDR to Ubud. A Grab costs 180,000-220,000 IDR. Walk 5 minutes to the pickup zone.
- Money changers on the street: Count your money twice. Some use sleight of hand to short you. Use a bank or a proper office.
- Sacred Monkey Forest: It’s fine, but the monkeys are aggressive and it’s packed by 9am. If you’ve seen macaques elsewhere, skip it.
- Tanah Lot at sunset: Beautiful temple, but the sunset crowd is shoulder-to-shoulder. Go at 8am instead.
The underlying rule: if it’s on a top-10 list, go at opening time or skip it. Bali rewards early risers and punishes late sleepers.
Budget Reality Check for 2026
Bali is no longer the ultra-cheap destination of 2015. Prices have risen sharply. Here’s what to actually budget per person for 7 days, excluding international flights.
| Category | Budget | Mid-range | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (6 nights) | 1,800,000 IDR | 4,200,000 IDR | 9,000,000 IDR |
| Food and drinks | 1,200,000 IDR | 2,100,000 IDR | 3,500,000 IDR |
| Transport (scooter + drivers) | 800,000 IDR | 1,500,000 IDR | 2,800,000 IDR |
| Activities and entries | 400,000 IDR | 800,000 IDR | 1,500,000 IDR |
| Total | 4,200,000 IDR | 8,600,000 IDR | 16,800,000 IDR |
Those totals are roughly $270, $550, and $1,070 USD at current rates. Budget travelers should rent a scooter (75,000 IDR a day) and eat at warungs. Mid-range means private drivers and nicer guesthouses. Comfortable means boutique hotels and restaurant meals.
Rent travel insurance. Medical evacuation from Bali costs $30,000+. A good policy from SafetyWing or World Nomads costs $40-70 for a week. This is not optional.
Scooter rental is the biggest hidden cost. If you crash without an international driver’s permit, your insurance won’t cover you. And you will see tourists with road rash. It’s common.
The verdict: this route works because it front-loads the iconic spots and back-loads the quiet ones. You get the photos, then you get the actual vacation. Skip Canggu. Stay in Sidemen. Start every day before 7am. That’s the whole strategy.
