Did you know that there’s lots of festive fun to be had just across the Channel? Christmas in Calais offers something for everyone in the lead up to the big day, and a visit here is guaranteed to give you that festive feeling.
Here, we share information about the three areas of Calais that are ready for Christmas in Europe, including their popular Christmas market, ice rink, and fabulous illuminations.
Calais Christmas market – 1st December – 30th December
When you reach Calais’ theatre, you’ll see the city’s Christmas market in all its glory. The theatre itself is decorated with fairy light bows, and it is surrounded by little wooden chalets that are dressed for the festive season. Selling everything from handmade gifts and candles to unique toys and knitwear, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing traditional stocking fillers for your family and friends.
In addition to buying gifts for others, you can treat yourself to sweets and freshly made crepes, mulled wine, hot chocolate, and roasted chestnuts – no Christmas market is complete without them! You’ll also find a carousel which young children will love and, as with the Magical Forest, you’ll be able to enjoy Christmas music as you take in all of the delights that the market has to offer.
Calais’ World of Toys – Selected dates 26th November – 1st January
On the other side of town, at Place d’Armes, you’ll find Calais’ World of Toys. Boasting a number of illuminations, including a sleigh that you can climb into, the centrepiece of this winter wonderland is its 1900s double-decker carousel. Children and adults alike will love choosing which horse, boat, or other vehicle to ride on, before warming up with a hot drink and a delicious snack from one of the surrounding cabins.
Head away from the carousel, under the illuminated Olaf arch, and you’ll find a magical indoor ice rink. With festive lights, Christmas tunes, and plenty of space to skate around on, you’re sure to be in your element. Small children (and nervous skaters) will love the variety of skating aids available too – we particularly like the reindeer ones!
